When is the best time to revive your intentions?

After taking a break in January, let's dive into intention setting for the new year.

Wait, what?! Isn’t it a little late to be talking about intention setting? Nope.

February is full of fresh, new energy so it’s a great time to revisit your intentions and:

  • reflect if they are still a priority

  • review how much or little you’ve paid attention to them and why

  • reconfigure your intentions — subtracting some and adding others

Anytime is a good time to pay attention to your thoughts, emotions, and actions!

Below are some tips to reboot your resolutions now

Let Go of Perfection

Sometimes we think we need a clean house, soothing music, a cup of tea, candles or a fire burning, crystals and a beautiful journal ready before we can reflect upon our intentions. Not so.

This work is internal and not something we do for social media level perfection.

In fact, I used to repurpose my kids’ old school notebooks which were often only half-used despite a full academic year.

This year, however, I wanted to keep a closer pulse on my daily actions so I upgraded to the Accountability Works journal. And one month in, I've been more successful on the same intention I've set for 15 years straight – more yoga!

Make it a Family Affair

One of the families I work with brought out their crayons and markers to give their New Year intentions a creative flair.

Then they taped their creations on a prominent wall where they’d see them regularly and check in with each other to see how things are going. Seeing their drawings also keeps their fun family memory alive.

Even very young children can learn they have agency over their internal intentions.

Another family with young children made a box to hold their “thank you” letters to the Universe.

They imagined in advance all the amazing things the Universe could bring them this year and then expressed their gratitude — this fosters an abundance mindset.

Recalibrate What’s Important

Did you make lofty intentions this year, but then a family member became ill or you lost your job? Were you one of millions impacted by the recent storms, freezes, or power outages?

Welcome to the club of humanity. Real life happens. Even the best-laid plans can get derailed.

Given this, when we continuously recalibrate our intentions, we’re able to respond to present moment needs and also get back on track quickly.

As an example, my family unexpectedly adopted a dog in January which really threw a wrench into our schedule. But the love and family bonding this little guy has brought into our lives has been worth the trade-off in time “lost” caring for him.

When I feel like I'm falling behind, I reassess what is most important to me – in this case, being present to this experience with my family. Remembering this perspective helps me to relax about my other intentions getting knocked down a rung or two on my priority list.

We’re three weeks in and all adjusting and recalibrating. For example, I used to be able to run with our previous dog, Oslo, but there's no chance of that with Milo without some serious dog training intervention.

Now I'm standing around a lot at the dog park which I don't love, but we're meeting lots of interesting and nice people which I do!

In Summary

Anytime is the right time to set or revisit intentions --the beginning of a month, a new season, a holiday, a new or full moon, a solstice, or a random Tuesday.

Our goal is to slow down and reflect on intentionally living verses reacting to external circumstances. Enjoy the process!
